Case Study #2

Police Car Movement Tracked From Internet. A police department recently installed a wireless network that allowed the computers in their fleet of approximately one hundred patrol cars to access the department's main computer systems. Even though they had configured the devices to use the built-in security features, they were concerned about their vulnerability and asked Ra Security Systems to audit the wireless network. RSS determined that it was possible to track patrol cars using the new wirelss equipment anonymously from the public Internet. Ra Security Systems was contracted to develope a hardened wireless configuration and to implement and maintain border controls.

Conclusion: Using common and well known security tools in conjunction with commoditized devices can give off the appearance of security. Security assessments are the best method to determine true risk.
